It is with a heavy heart that I write tonight's post. We learned that Matt Bishop suffered from an apparent heart aneurysm yesterday and passed away. At 31 years old Matt was very young and is survived by his wife and two girls; ages 9 and two months old. Our hearts go out to his family during this time of tragedy.
Matt had recently completed his service in the Navy and was looking forward to life outside of the Military. Matt had been CrossFitting here and there until he moved to Travis AFB. While at Travis he had been training in his garage while awaiting the arrival of his youngest daughter. Matt came to us in October and was steadily tearing up the record board. He had a bright smile, a contagious laugh and after a couple of particularly nasty WOD'S he would say "Damn that's good stuff!"
In his short time with us Matt made the record board for "Karen," 150 Wall Ball Shots for Time. Matt was a CrossFitter. He enjoyed the competition, he enjoyed the camaraderie, he enjoyed the push. Blood, sweat, and chalk, Matt was one of us. Matt posted this comment to "Why do you CrossFit?"
I CrossFit because....It challenges my mind beyond what I think my body can do. To overcoming these challenges makes you stronger, and your body will follow. This unique system of exercise and philosophy draws only dedicated individuals looking for real change in their life; to be healthy, confident, and grow companionship's along the way. I joined this team not long ago and already I feel a part of this machine we call CROSSFIT SOLANO. We are a mixed bag of elite people who desire a common goal. Again, thanks to all the instructors and the positive motivation from my fellow CrossFitters
To honor Matt and help his family through this unexpected tragedy CrossFit Solano will be doing "Karen" on Saturday December 12th at 9 AM.
We will be asking for $5 to $10 from each participant. Funds raised from this event will go to the Bishop family. This event is open to EVERYONE and ANYONE, No CrossFit Experience Necessary. Grab a friend, grab a neighbor, grab a family member and come help our Fallen CrossFitter and his family.
WOD for 12042009

Due to my absenteeism these past two months, I didn't get the pleasure of meeting Matt. It sounds like I really missed out on a great person. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP Matt.
I didn't see a WOD posted for today, is the gym closed?

I suppose I just missed Matt whenever I would come into the gym and he would leave. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to meet him, makes me really sad and take a step back to look at my life. If he was a Solano Crossfitter, he must have been a wonderful person! My thoughts and prayers go out to all that knew Matt. I will be there on Saturday to support Matt's family in this horrible time in their lives.
R. I. P. ~May angels fly with you~
Along with Lisa I didn't notice a WOD posted for this morning....I will still show up for the 9am class, hopefully someone will be there.

Sending our love and support to the Bishop Family.
Matt's story will be in the Affiliate Blog on Sunday.
With beauty, may I walk.
With beauty before me, may I walk.
With beauty behind me, may I walk.
With beauty above me, may I walk.
With beauty all around me, may I walk.
(It's an excerpt from a Navajo ceremony. It makes more sense in the language but this is the closest translation.)
Semper Fortis, Matt.

Such sadness for Matt's family and our CrossFit family too. This should remind us to always live our lives to the fullest because we don't know how long we have on this earth. It sounds like Matt lived his life that way. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his young family.

RE: Lumberjack 20
This Saturday, December 5th, CrossFit will post the Workout of the Day known as the Lumberjack 20, in honor of the men and women who were killed at Ft. Hood. This is the first Hero WOD for multiple heroes. Hundreds of affiliates, and no doubt thousands of CrossFitters, will hit the workout at max intensity throughout the day, thinking of those brave soldiers.
CrossFit has set up a fundraiser for the families of the fallen, as well as those thirty wounded. Many are still in intensive care. Many donations have come in, and every little bit will no doubt be helpful. Right now, the total of the donations is under $14,000.
If you would like to donate to the families, visit the official CrossFit Lumberjack page: http://www.cflumberjack.org/
Additionally, if you would like to do the Lumberjack 20 WOD, please attend the 0830 class tomorrow, Saturday, Dec 5. This looks like it could take a while so Meg and I will run it once starting at 0830.
Regular WODs from the past three days will also be run for both 0830 and 0930 classes.

"I sought to show the changing balance of planes - from anti-ship torpedo and dive bombers in the early days when the main objective was destroying other ships - to fighter planes, whose main job was to defend against the kamikazes in the final months."
Max, Midway is pretty much the final act of anti-ship carrier warfare, right? If you follow Keegan and Churchill, it's the critical turning point in the Pacfic war - there's a wonderfully readable description of Midway in Keegan's The Price of Admiralty.

We ascribe beauty to that which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its end; which stands related to all things; which is the mean of many extremes. Do you agree?
