As some of you are aware, The CrossFit Games Season is upon us! For those of you that don't know, you may be thinking "what does this mean?"
The CrossFit Games season is a three-stage test of fitness. It is comprised of the Open, Regionals, and the world championship, the CrossFit Games.
The season kicks off with the Open, the most inclusive competition in the world. The top athletes and teams in each region from the Open will move onto Regionals. The best athletes and teams at Regionals will compete at the CrossFit Games from July 13-15, the world’s premier test to find the Fittest on Earth™.
Below is a detailed explanation of the Games season for Individual athletes, teams, and Masters.
Individual Men and Women
On July 15, 2012 we will crown the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth. They will have outperformed every other athlete at the Games after qualifying through both the Regionals and worldwide Open.
In order to identify the Fittest, we invite everyone in the world to compete in the Open, register here. Each week from February 22-March 25, an Open workout is posted and everyone does it. They have the choice to have their performance validated at a CrossFit affiliate, or submit a videotape of their performance to the Games website. The Open will consist of five workouts over five weeks.
The Open’s top 60 athletes in each region move on to the second stage of the competition, Regionals. Each Regional will be a three-day competition. Seventeen Regional competitions, covering the entire world will take place each weekend from April 27 to May 27. At the Regional level, individuals are judged, reps are counted for each workout. No more than three men and three women will advance to the third and final stage of the competition – the CrossFit Games at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The 2012 Games will run from July 13-15.
Team
On February 22nd, the team competition starts with the Open. All of a team’s members must register on the Games site. The team captain then must set up a team account and add the members of their team.
For the first time ever, affiliates may have more than one team. Once the Open begins, however, athletes cannot be added or moved between teams.
Team athletes will complete the five Open workouts like individual competitors. If an athlete chooses to register with a team, the athlete can still compete in the individual competition at the Regional level, if they qualify. A team’s top three male and female scores in the week’s workout will contribute to the team’s standings.
At the conclusion of the Open, the top 30 teams in each Region will advance to Regionals. A team’s Regional roster must draw from the group of athletes that represented it during the Open. Teams are comprised of three men and three women.
Over the course of three days, six team members will complete workouts together. Sometimes, only two members will do the workout, sometimes four, sometimes all six. No more than three teams will advance to the CrossFit Games Affiliate Cup.
Masters
The Masters competition is for athletes ages 45 and older. For the second year, the Masters level competition will be split into four age categories - 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60-plus.
Masters athletes will register in the Open, complete the workouts just as the individuals. Some age divisions will have modified standards, but all workouts must be completed as prescribed.
Masters competitors will not have to compete at the Regional level. The top 20 in each age category will receive invitations to compete at the CrossFit Games.
If you are considering participating, AND EVERYONE SHOULD, please look over the rules.
Cash prizes will be awarded as follows: 1. 1st place man and woman, US$250,000 each 2. 2nd place man and woman, US$50,000 each 3. 3rd place man and woman, US$25,000 each 4. 1st place Team, US$30,000 per team 5. 2nd place Team, US$12,000 per team 6. 3rd place Team, US$6,000 per team 7. 1st place Master (each division), US$3,000 8. 2nd place Master (each division), US$1,000 9. 3rd place Master (each division), US$500
CrossFit Solano will be a registered affiliate where you can compete. In the next few weeks we will set up a schedule of set times in which a coach will be available to judge you; pending size, we may run heats. WODs must be completed between Wednesday-Sunday. If you are considering registering, please post a comment to encourage others but also so we can get a head count of how many judges/heats we could need. Regardless if you want to be on the Team or Individual, everyone must complete the WODs.
